Troop 33

Pastor Higa of Streams of Life (the church group we share the scout hut with) has invited Troop 33 scouts, parents, and grandparents to a Valentine Luncheon to be held on Sunday, February 11, 10 am, at the Manoa School Cafeteria.  See attached flyer.  We will have a sign-up sheet at the scout hut.  Deadline to sign up will be Sunday, February 4.  There is no cost to attend the luncheon.

This is a very nice gesture from Streams of Life as we occasionally inconvenience them when we return to scout hut from camps on Sunday morning. Unfortunately, this is the same day as our 15-mile hike.  If you are not attending the hike, but can attend the luncheon, please consider attending the luncheon. 


On Friday Jan. 12, we presented information about an opportunity for Scouts to go to Philmont Scout Ranch, a 140,000 acre permanent BSA site, in New Mexico for a High-Adventure camp from July 22-August 3, 2019. It would be a tremendous experience for our Scouts who are looking to take their High-Adventure camping to the next level. Below are links to their website, as well as to the Power Point presentation containing the pertinent information and YouTube videos which can show you what Philmont has to offer.

The Troop has been awarded this slot via lottery tentatively but will need to put down a deposit by the end of the month to keep it. We need to hear soon from Scouts as well as adults/ASM’s who are able to travel approx. July 20-August 4, 2019. We are trying to put together a crew of 7-12 people, with a minimum of 2 adults. Please look through the information and sign up on the sheet up on the board at the Scout Hut to express your interest in going. Everyone who has gone to Phimont has only wonderful experiences to tell of! If you have questions, please feel free to contact James Ng.


Troop 33 scouts have an opportunity to become “Citizen Foresters” with the Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources.  This is a new DLNR program to inventory trees in urban areas and they are starting with Kailua, Waikiki, and Manoa.  This is an opportunity for scouts to learn about tree species, tree health assessment, and use of GPS/smart phones.  It is also an opportunity to perform conservation service hours towards advancement (Life Rank requires 3 conservation-related service hours) and towards the BSA National Outdoor Awards program.  The Citizen Forester program entails attending three training sessions then working on inventorying trees in urban areas.

The training schedule is:

Saturday, January 20

  9 am – 11 am,  YMCA on Atkinson Dr., Measure and Assess Trees

  11:30 – 1 pm, Ala Moana Park, Field Training

Saturday, February 10

  9 am – 11 am, YMCA on Atkinson Dr., Tree Species Identification

  11:30 am – 1 pm, Ala Moana Park, Field Training

Saturday, February 17

  9 am – 11,  YMCA on Atkinson Dr., Plotting location and recording observations

  11:30 am – 1 pm, Ala Moana Park, Field Training

Please note that we will need a few adults to attend the training and to help with the tree inventory.

Also, an updated Troop 33 calendar of events has been posted to the Troop 33 website.  Here is a link. The dates for several events (e.g. Crossover Camp, Ehrhorn Camp, and Moanalua Camp) have been changed due to availability of the venues and a camp at Coconut Island has replaced the DAV or Hoomaluhia Drive Up Camp.  There will be a Patrol Leader Council (PLC) meeting this Friday after the troop meeting to discuss and determine the instructors for the various instructions.  Once the instructors are set, another update to the calendar showing the instructors will be posted to the Troop 33 website.

A friendly reminder the Court of Honor Christmas party will be held this Friday, December 15,  in the Manoa school cafeteria at 7:30pm.  For those who are participating in the COH ceremony, please arrive by 6:30pm for rehearsal.  Full Class A uniform for all scouts.  We will have a gift exchange for those interested.  Please bring a wrapped grab bag gift. $10 for scouts and $25 for each participating adult.  It will be a fun filled evening, hope to see you all there!
